Recognition of Prior Learning - Step by Step RPL Process

Upon receiving your application kit...

Step One

You will need to complete the forms contained in your application kit you receive for your chosen trade area. The application kit will ask you for evidence and examples of proof of your experience in your trade. You need to supply as much evidence as you can for the person assessing your application.

Below is a list of examples that could be used as evidence of work history in your trade area: Any licences e.g. Queensland Building Services Authority License.

  1. Certificates/Results of Assessment including interstate/overseas/universities
  2. Industry awards
  3. References/letters from previous employers/supervisors
  4. Brief CV and Work History
  5. Indentures/Trade Papers
  6. Photographs of work undertaken
  7. Membership of relevant professional associations eg: Qld Building Services Authority (QBSA)

A payment of $500 must be attached to the Application. This payment will cover the cost of the assessment and up to 3 units of "gap" training (if required). You will also need two (2) third party reports from work referees who can confirm your skills in the industry.

Step Two

An assessor will review the information you have provided (usually with you) and begin to match up your skills to the units/subjects in the trade qualification. At this point, you will have the opportunity to discuss and identify your previous experience with the assessor who will understand your industry experience and conduct a professional conversation with you. You will be required to answer furnishing industry related questions (verbally and/or written) to identify your current skills.

Step Three

The assessor will conduct a practical skills test at your workplace if appropriate or at another suitable venue. This, again, is an opportunity to demonstrate your level of competence. This assessment will be focussed on skills that are required in the qualification. Your assessor will identify the skills that he/she will want you to demonstrate.

Further Steps

After the assessment, your assessor will give you information about the skills that have been recognised and if you have gained the full qualification. If you do have skill gaps these may be addressed through flexible training.
